You know what? I was supposed to post this in the summer, but I took too long trying to write this post. However, I think it’s quite serendipitous really, because zinc oxide is used in sunscreen. What better way to remind you all that you should keep slathering on the sun protectants even as we are going into the colder months? Just because it’s cold doesn’t mean the sun can’t damage your perfect, beautiful skin!

So, tell us, what IS Zinc Oxide?

You know that mineral found in nature called zincite? Yes? No? Either way, you derive zinc from it, powder and oxidize it and you have… Zinc Oxide!

What is Zinc Oxide known for?

Obviously, if you keep afoot of the INCI lists on the back of your bottles, you will know that zinc oxide is predominantly known for its usage in sunscreens. It’s a physical block meaning it reflects the sunrays off of your skin instead of absorbing it. Part of why it’s so popular in sunscreens is because it’s mineral based and has a very low risk of skin sensitization and ALSO, because it is the broadest spectrum UVA/UVB ingredient that the FDA approves of. BONUS, pregnant women can totally use sunscreens containing zinc oxide.

Is it a one trick pony or can we find it in other cosmetics?

Zinc oxide can be found in a plethora of other things besides sunscreen! It’s a bulking agent and a colorant (cough, the white cast sunscreen gives when it has zinc oxide, cough) and lends an opacity to things like foundation. It also can be found in lotions, soaps and foot powder (sexy!). You know what else it can be found in? Products like rubber, paint, ceramics, plastic and more (so unsexy!)I hope that doesn’t disturb you because it really is a killer ingredient to protect you from the sun!

What else can it do?

Zinc oxide can actually treat loads of skin conditions which is why you’ll find it in things like calamine lotion, foot powder, and diaper rash ointments!

We’ve heard about nanotechnology. How does this effect formulations containing nanoparticle zinc oxide?

Let’s explain nanotechnology and why it’s being used in the first place. Nanotechnology basically takes the ingredient and breaks it down into an itty-bitty size. Why are they doing it with zinc oxide? It supposedly helps take away that white cast mineral sunscreens can leave on your skin. Furthermore, it is said to enhance the products SPF, though I’m unsure of how it does this. It should be noted that nanosized zinc oxide is not considered to be a safety issue for skin.

Additional Facts

Your product can be made with up to 25% zinc oxide! Now, that’s what I call making it to the top of the ingredients list! Additionally, a pound of zinc oxide can cost you anywhere from $6 to $15.
