You know what one of my all time favorite food ingredients is? If you said chocolate, that’s correct, but there’s another ingredient that vies for the top spot.

It’s flour. It’s the basis for all those amazing baked goodies. Just think, cake. Bread. Muffins. Donuts. Mmmm, donuts. D’oh!

Obviously, the most popular flour of choice is All Purpose Flour, which is a mix of hard and soft wheat. It tends to be the go-to flour because it’s the easiest to use. You can also, for some strange reason, get this bleached, buy WHY would you do that? It’s unnecessary. Totally, freaking unnecessary. Your muffins will come out just as tasty if you use the unbleached version. Trust me, I know this. I’ve taste tested PLENTY of baked goods (and happily!) and have come to the determination that you should do yourself some good and get the unbleached stuff!

I think the appealing thing about All Purpose Flour is that it is composed of 85% carbohydrates. Mostly starches. It’s the secret to all its tastiness, I’m sure!

The bummer is, gluten is involved when it comes to flour. There are lots of people who can’t handle gluten and to be frank… That’s just not fair. Cookies probably aren’t as tasty without all purpose flour. Maybe I should make gluten free cookies to test this theory out. You know how I like to taste test things!

Some of the good stuff you can find in all purpose flour includes: selenium, niacin, riboflavin and thiamin. Some of the bad stuff is 455 calories in one cup of flour. No worries though, it’s highly unlikely you’ll ever eat a cup’s worth of flour in one sitting… Unless you eat a whole cake, which if you manage to do, congrats!

  • The Eclectic Contrarian

I know this might seem absolutely disgusting to you, but in some countries they will dry out crickets and grind them into powder. And they use it as a flour! It has a lot of protein in it and is just as healthy as what you buy at the store.

    • That’s actually really interesting! Totally honest, I’m actually wondering what cricket flour bread would taste like!

The US is just about the only country that frowns on eating bugs. Not saying that I think they’re tasty and should be the new best thing but it’s not as weird as we make it out to be…

        • It’s true, I don’t see myself eating bugs like popcorn in the near future but I do recognize that it is even considered gourmet in some places!

    • Thanks for stopping by John, as always, your comments are awesome!

  • Flour is the heart of many kitchens I have a lot to learn on what to make with this ingredient! Great post, I enjoyed reading it!

  • Just eat chocolate covered crickets and you get two of you favorite things in one bite! 🤣🤣😂

  • Oh yes!!! Two wonderful ingredients! As for Johns comment about bugs, I bought two suckers for the grandkids at Jungle Jim’s. One with a scorpion in it and one with a cricket! hahahahaha
