I’ve always had a soft spot for a good pathetic song and no one sings a pathetic song quite like Elvis Presley. Because let’s face it, when Elvis pouts, people listen.
“Are You Lonesome Tonight” fits the bill perfectly. Girl doesn’t love him so she leaves him. However, good ol’ Elvis is questioning whether she misses him by now or not. He even starts the song with this little number:
Are you lonesome tonight?
Do you miss me tonight?
Are you sorry we drifted apart?
Does your memory stray
To a brighter sunny day
When I kissed you and called you sweetheart?
From the sound of it, her answer would’ve been a solid no.
This is pretty much confirmed when he does his Elvis talk later on:
Honey, you lied when you said you loved me
And I had no cause to doubt you
But I’d rather go on hearing your lies
Than to go on living without you
Now, I know there is many hearing this who would say “Aww, poor guy!” but all I feel is relief. It’s the relief that I am not the only one who has suffered the embarrassment of being this heartsick. You know, this pathetic. It’s such a human condition and Elvis does such a fantastic job of showcasing it.
And thank God, all of this for me, was soooo high school and I’ve gladly moved on from those raging hormones. Now? I can listen and appreciate the fragile condition of the human psyche.
Fun fact: Elvis Presley recorded this song in the dark. I think to hide the shame from all the memories he had to bring up to get that perfect pitiful tone. I mean, he really brings it you guys.

I still remember the day he died, My father in law to be said to me “The King is Dead”.
It’s amazing the legacy he left. His music is still going strong!
