I did a post a few weeks ago discussing the beauty gadgets I’d buy if I were stupidly rich. Now I’d like to discuss with you the expensive crap I have bought in the name of beauty. Doing this is great since it tends to curb my desire for flashy things. Some products work, and some products I’ll confess to being terribly embarrassed about spending my money on. Let me share my dirty little spending habits with you.
GHD Platinum Hair Straightener – $250
At the time, this straightener normally retailed for $250. GULP, what was I thinking? Don’t worry, it isn’t as bad as it sounds because they were on clearance for $160. I believe they were getting rid of old stock to make room for the newer version of this. I do not regret buying this despite the “OMG, what?” price tag. It doesn’t fry my hair the way my drugstore flatiron did. Plus, I can do more hairstyles than just straightening due to the curved shape of the straightener. It allows for beachy waves, to curly curls.
Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer – $399
This is by far my most embarrassing purchase. Who spends several hundreds worth of dollars on a hairdryer? Me, that’s who. IN MY DEFENSE, the store (I think it was Bad, Bath and Beyond?) was offering $100 off certain Dyson products. Plus, I had a nifty 20% of coupon so it actually cost me more like $250. Do you see how I justified this purchase? Honestly, I have hair that can’t be tamed. I was hoping that using this kick ass hair dryer would give me fantastical hair with mystical unicorn properties. I will say this, it IS the best hair dryer on the market, no doubt about it. If this was sent to me for free, I’d be telling you all that it’s perfection that looks like art and does good things for your hair. HOWEVER, because I shelled out real money I can’t help but think that in the end… Its main goal is to dry your hair. And it shouldn’t cost $400 to dry your hair.
T3 Whirl Trio Interchangeable Set – $249
Are you seeing a theme here? It’s an obsession with trying to tame my hair. I didn’t even realize the crap-ton of money I’ve spent trying to find the item that makes it look normal. I *do* like this set though. T3 offers a convertible base which retails for $100 dollars on its own. You can then buy different wands and clip irons for $95 a pop. This set with the convertible base and three different wand sizes is actually a really good deal. I love that I only have *one* cord to deal with in my already overpacked bathroom drawers and yet have multiple curling wands/irons at my disposal. I also like these because they actually noticeably curl my hair for extended periods of time, which was something I thought was an impossible dream for most of my life.
Clinique Sonic Brush – $50
Finally, a tool that’s a *little* more reasonably priced and not related to my hair. Everyone was trying out the Clarisonic, but I thought “eh, that sounds so expensive.” which is a laughable thought after seeing the things I blew wads of cash on. Clinique’s Sonic Brush seemed like a good compromise. Plus, I have a strange loyalty to Clinique since their Superbalanced Foundation was my first ever high end makeup product. I ended up giving this brush away. Partly because I felt like I had to clean the brush more often than I cleaned my face, and having to replace the brush head altogether every few weeks ultimately killed this for me. I gave it away with zero regrets.
Slip Silk Pillowcase in King Size – $105
I recently got this in the 25% off sale that happened at the Dermstore. I know this isn’t technically a “gadget” but it is its own beauty tool in a sense. This is definitely a case of “you get what you pay for.” I’ve had the $40 silk cases you can get on Amazon, but the Slip brand is a whole other level. The feel of the silk is absolutely incredible and this is probably my favorite buy out of all my splurges.
I always wondered if the Dyson products were any good. I never tried them because of the price. Can’t beat a good sale…lol
I did get a good deal, but it still felt like too much after the fact. Oh well, at least I have the best hairdryer around!

My hair looks like a caveman styled it most days. It’s pretty bleak.
I think the Dyson gets the biggest face palm of my life. Sometimes, I really don’t think I’m in my right mind when I make purchases.
