I hope everyone reading this is finding themselves in good health.

As part of my job duties as an educator, I have been called upon to provide childcare duties to the children of first responders–something that is most definitely needed at this time of crisis. It’s a job I was more than happy to do–until I arrived on site.

We were promised a district nurse, who would screen all incoming adults and children for health issues before allowing them access to childcare. We were also promised stringent sanitization protocols that are, well, barely there.

Our “nurse” is no nurse, but a staff member from the Y. The screening process consists of taking temperatures with a broken thermometer (my temperature was 96.1 degrees. What does that tell you?). The “stringent sanitation protocols” have consisted of a bottle of cleanser and a box of latex gloves. There isn’t even hand sanitizer in the room.

I write this not to have a pity party but to encourage you all to make sure that all of your essential workers are being provided the right materials to stay healthy and safe. I’ve already gotten together a strong group to protest the actions of my school district’s haphazard care, but I can only imagine that other industry areas are also suffering this lack of due diligence.

If there is an area of concern for you, I strongly encourage you do advocate.
