You guys, I often look way younger than my age. I know, WOE IS ME right?! I’m often mistaken for being a full decade younger than my age, and then there are days where if I pack on enough foundation and concealer, I transform myself into a twelve year old who snuck in and stole her mom’s makeup.

Accidental Mirror Selfie. My mirror has the ability to turn back time.

This is all great and dandy, and if I’m being honest brings me far more joy than it should. However, I have found that there are a lot of assumptions made about you when you look young and dabble in makeup. For example, when I quote something, or show knowledge in obscure bits of history, there is usually a surprised look, and a “How could you possibly know that?” question that follows. I’ve had people tell me that they thought I was flakey, failed tests and seem bubble headed ALL BASED ON HOW I LOOKED and not on actually knowing me. I find this insane. And yes, my youthful appearance and the makeup I wore were all to blame. Apparently, I seem… so highschool.

So I find it interesting, in my own personal psychology, that seeing this happen in my own life, that I still make the choice to “put on my face”. Honestly, I enjoy the artistry of it. It also provides a certain therapy for me. It calms me down and slows down my pace. It gives me zen.

Plus, I feel like I can take on the world when I put it on. You could call it my war paint.

Assumptions be damned. I’m more than okay with proving the world wrong by acing tests and being present in the world around me. I would’ve been doing that anyway with or without lipstick and a compact in my purse. So there.
